Mossad officers have been posing as CIA officials to recruit operatives against Iran's nuclear program, according to a Foreign Policy report published Friday. The magazine is the mouthpiece of the Council of Foreign Relations. The alleged operations reportedly infuriated senior officials in the United States, which under Obama's presidency has sharply curtailed joint US-Israeli intelligence operations. The report cites six US intelligence officers as sources of information - four of whom are retired and two whom are currently serving. Neither the Mossad, the CIA, nor the White House commented on the report.
The article, written by long-time critic of Israel, Mark Perry, described how Mossad officers recruited operatives by impersonating US CIA agents. The Mossad officers were equipped with US passports and dollars, and recruitment activities occured "under the nose of US intelligence officers," including in London. The Foreign Policy report focused on Jundallah, or Soldiers of God - a Sunni terrorist group based in Pakistan. The organization has admitted to carrying out suicide bombings against Shi'ites, notably in Iran. Israeli officials had been recruiting them to strike against Iran's nuclear program, an activity which could be ongoing, according to the US intelligence sources.
News of the "false flag" operations carried out by Israel reached the highest echelons of US government in years past, angering them and causing tension between the two allies. According to the article, former US president George W. Bush "went absolutely ballistic" when he was briefed about one such operation that resulted in the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist. The report claimed that upon entering office, US President Barack Obama "drastically scaled back joint US-Israel intelligence programs targeting Iran," citing multiple serving and retired officers. Israel regularly proposes joint Israeli-US covert operations against the Iranian nuclear program, including proposals for assassinations, but US officials routinely reject them, it said.

This article is another instance of unnamed US officials leaking false statements to the press that cast Israel in a bad light. Clearly, this US pattern of denigrating Israel is intentional and destructive. It is a policy strategy which will not help anyone.
How do I know it is false that Mossad posed as CIA to recruit operatives against Iran's nuclear program?
1) There is no advantage for Mossad to pose as CIA. Sure, Mossad may not be trusted or liked, but neither is CIA. Does anyone imagine that a prospective anti-Iranian agent is going to think, 'Gee, I'm glad you're CIA. I feared you might be Mossad? Not going to happen. 2) The only reason someone would falsely pose as CIA would be to shift blame. But Mossad has no motive for blaming CIA. Mossad chiefly would want to setback Iran's nuclear program. They gain nothing by accusing CIA. 3) The mental sickness of the US officials who are leaking the accusations against Israel can always be detected. That's because the leaks don't really advance the goal of stopping Iran's nuclear program. Rather, the leaks hurt Israel's reputation as a trusted ally. Some people might view that as anti-semitic.
Comment by RonaldH on January 15, 2012 at 4:37am First of all, no one really knows who is assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists, so George Bush had no valid reason for 'going ballistic'. US intelligence knows that their is a large opposition movement in Iran which has been trying to overthrow the Mullahs for years now. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on Iranian homegrown rebels as being responsible for the assassinations of the nuclear scientists. Secondly, any Jew, including highly trained Mossad agents, would be risking their own life with an operation in Pakistan such as described in this article. Sunni Muslim terrorists may not like Shia in Iran, but they hate Jews more. This sounds like a fictional mission conducted by Mossad agents who don't exist. No one ever said 'Foreign Policy' and some elements in the CIA don't have active imaginations. Interesting reading, but totally untrue.
