In Israeli civilian life these days, battles are being fought over the right of women to sit where they wish in ultra-orthodox buses. But in Israel's citizen army, the role of women is being heralded as an essential element in the nation's defense.
Dover Tzahal, the public diplomacy unit of the Israel Defense Forces -- the "spokespeople" of the army -- has justed issued an upbeat, almost MTV-quality clip about the role of women in training predominantly male soldiers how to handle their guns.
The introduction of "Lock and Load – An Inside Look at an IDF Weapons Instructor," released to YouTube and destined to be a viral hit, starts with the "well known fact that the IDF trains some of the best soldiers in the world," and that "at the source of every good soldier lies an exceptional instructor."
And -- spoiler ahead -- it turns out that, not infrequently, the instructor is of the gentler gender. "That’s where Cpl. Daniella Stepanoe steps in. Originally born in Israel, she moved to California as a teenager before finally returning to Israel to serve with the IDF. Since then, she has risen through the ranks of the military to become a weapons instructor, and now travels from base to base training everyone from paratroopers to elite special forces units in the use of their weapons.
In the video, Cpl. Stepanoe talks about what it’s like to serve as a weapons instructor, and then -- Dover Tzahal tells us -- "takes some time out to show off her skills."
Deadeye Daniella should start setting up her Facebook fan page. She's about to be famous.
